What to Expect

Makuwa Safari Lodge is situated on a 70 hectare nature reserve that forms part of the Great er Kruger National Park Area.

Although we do not have the big 5 on our property, we have an abundance of birdlife and animals including Buffalo, Nyala, Kudu, Warthog, Zebra and other plains game. We also have occasional visits from hyena, wild dog, elephants and even the elusive leopard on the reserve.

Game Drives take place in the Kruger National Park or Manyeleti Game Reserve, just a short 20 minute drive away. Guided bush walks are available on our property as well as longer walks on our neighbouring big-5 reserve.

Our rates include breakfast and dinner, a pre-booked light lunch is avaliable for R90 per person. Meals are prepared by your hosts in an open kitchen environment using fresh locally sourced ingredients. Should you be out on safari for the day, packed lunches can be arranged on request also at R90 per person.

Rains usually occur in our Summer season anytime from October to April each year. Summers are hot with temperatures of between 18 and 45 degrees Celsius  Winters are mild during the day and cold in the mornings and evenings with temperatures ranging between 6 and 25 degrees Celsius.

What to Pack

  • Lightweight, Neutral Coloured Clothing with Short Sleeves are recommended year-round.
  • Jackets.
  • Scarves and Beanies (Early mornings can be cold, especially during our Winter months – May through to September) .
  • Comfortable Walking shoes as well as Open Sandals for around camp
  • Sunblock, Hats, Sunglasses.
  • Swimming Clothes to enjoy our Swimming Pool.
  • Cameras, Chargers and Binoculars for Game Viewing.
  • We provide linen, towels and soap in the rooms – Please bring any additional amenities along.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Makuwa Safari Lodge is located in a low-risk malaria area. Guests are advised to take the appropriate precautions.

Did You Know?

Makuwa means ‘fig fruit’ in local Xitsonga.

The lodge was named after the big fig tree that towers over the boma area in the
centre of the lodge.
